Friends of the Astoria Armory (FOAA) is a nonprofit dedicated to improving Astorians’ quality of life by transforming the historic Astoria Armory into a community and events center. FOAA hosts a wide variety of community programs and provides space for community organizations. It is the largest indoor event space in Clatsop County and hosts trade shows, fairs, and private events.

Back in 2013, the City of Astoria wanted to acquire the parking lot adjacent to the Armory to support U.S. Coast Guard use of the 17th Street Pier and protect their recent investment rebuilding the pier. At the time, the Armory and the parking lot were both owned by the Columbia River Maritime Museum, but the Museum did not want to sell the two parcels separately. The City had no need, desire or funding available to acquire the Armory building itself, and so Craft3 – recognizing the value of returning the asset to productive community use – stepped in to purchase the Armory.

Craft3 began leasing the facility to the Friends in 2014 while it explored the feasibility of converting it into a successful community center. In late 2018, Craft3 provided a $550,000 loan to purchase the Armory at-cost and renovate the facility, including a new staircase and exit, improved mechanical systems, and modernization of the sound system, lobby, windows, bathrooms and kitchen.

This was possible with funding through the USDA Intermediary Relending Program and a partial loan guarantee from the City of Astoria. Learn more at www.astoriaarmory.com.
