Norma Hernandez

Director

Norma has a lengthy 21-year career in the nonprofit and financial sectors in Seattle and the Walla Walla Valley. She has focused on developing inclusive services and programs accessible to all community members, regardless of income or financial background. In 2008, as CEO of a credit union in Seattle, Norma played a vital role in turning it into the state’s first CDFI/Low-Income Credit Union, serving unbanked populations and victims of predatory lending practices.

Norma previously served on the board and was an employee at Craft3, working in commercial lending as an intake specialist and systems manager.

Norma serves as the Executive Director of The Health Center, an independent nonprofit school-based health clinic. This clinic offers slow-barrier, no-cost primary medical and behavioral health care to students enrolled in Walla Walla Public Schools' middle and high schools.

In March 2019, Norma was appointed to the College Place City Council, showcasing her leadership skills and community involvement. Her leadership was further recognized when she assumed the role of mayor in August 2019. Her election as mayor by the citizens of College Place in 2021 marked a historic moment, making her the first Latina to be elected to public office in the Walla Walla Valley.

Norma is an active community volunteer who serves on various boards, committees, and groups. Washington State Governor Jay Inslee appointed her to his Affordable Housing Advisory Board, and Governor Ferguson appointed her to his Project 2025 Sub-Committee.

Norma's roots trace back to El Paso, Texas, where her ancestors settled after immigrating from Mexico in the early 1900s. This rich heritage has always inspired her community work. Norma and her husband, Aaron, are high school sweethearts and have lived in Washington State since 1987.
